Telemark Sweater: Norwegian Ski Heritage Reimagined
The Telemark Sweater and Cardigan are modern merino wool knits inspired by traditional Norwegian patterns and the region that helped shape skiing as we know it today.
For WE NORWEGIANS, the name Telemark represents more than a place. It connects the collection to Norwegian mountain culture, generations of craftsmanship and a pioneering approach to life on skis.
Telemark: The Cradle of Modern Skiing
Deep within the mountains of Telemark lies Morgedal, a small village with an extraordinary place in skiing history.
It was here that Sondre Norheim, often called the father of modern skiing, began experimenting with the equipment and techniques that would transform skiing from a practical means of winter transportation into a sport.
Norheim developed shorter skis with curved sides and a more secure heel binding, giving skiers greater control and freedom of movement. His style helped establish techniques including the Telemark turn—a graceful free-heel turn that still carries the region’s name today.
This combination of heritage, movement and innovation made Telemark a natural source of inspiration for We Norwegians.
A Norwegian Tradition Given New Expression
Co-founder and Creative Director Tove Grane has always looked to Norwegian heritage as a starting point rather than a limitation.
With the Telemark collection, she once again takes something familiar and deeply rooted in the past and presents it through a distinctly modern lens.
The intricate pattern draws inspiration from traditional Norwegian knitting, while the proportions, styling and color combinations give it a contemporary expression. The result feels nostalgic without being old-fashioned—a celebration of where we come from, designed for how we dress today.
Meet the Telemark Sweater
The Telemark Sweater combines a traditional Norwegian-inspired pattern with a relaxed, oversized silhouette.
Its generous shape drapes effortlessly over the body, creating a look that feels cozy yet refined. A tall ribbed neckline, cuffs and hem frame the pattern and add structure to its relaxed proportions.
Knitted in luxuriously soft merino wool, it offers natural warmth without feeling heavy. The wool is exceptionally soft and non-itchy, making the sweater gentle enough to wear directly against the skin.
Style it with the Geilo Merino Wool Lounge Pants for a complete cold-weather look, or pair it with ski pants, tailored trousers or denim for an effortless transition between the mountains and the city.
Meet the Telemark Cardigan
The Telemark Cardigan offers another interpretation of the same Norwegian-inspired story.
Its button-front silhouette makes it easy to wear as a statement knit or as an elevated layering piece. Wear it buttoned over a fine merino base layer, open over a simple top or styled with black trousers for a more polished approach.
Like the sweater, it is crafted in soft merino wool for warmth, comfort and breathability throughout the colder months.
Why Merino Wool?
Merino wool is naturally temperature-regulating, breathable and moisture-managing, making it especially well suited to winter dressing. This amazing fiber has been a natural part of the We Norwegian brand's DNA since the inception of the collection. Wool is a natural part of Norwegians' everyday life with its incredible properties. 6 reasons we love Merino so much:
- It's Temperature Regulating
- Will keep you warm even when it's wet
- It's Quick Drying
- Safe on Sensitive Skin
- Odor Resistant
- It's Nature's Own Technical Fiber with Incredible Breathability`
Merino provides warmth while remaining lightweight and comfortable, allowing the Telemark pieces to move easily between changing environments—from a cold morning outside to an afternoon by the fire.
Its exceptional softness also makes the collection suitable for wearing close to the skin, without the coarse or itchy feeling sometimes associated with traditional wool sweaters.
A Landscape Worthy of the Name
Telemark’s skiing heritage is matched by its dramatic landscape.
Rising 1,883 meters above sea level, Gaustatoppen is the region’s highest mountain. On a clear day, its summit offers views across as much as one-sixth of mainland Norway—a vast panorama of mountains, valleys and open wilderness.
It is this sense of scale, freedom and connection to the landscape that continues to influence We Norwegians.
The Telemark collection brings that inspiration into a wearable form: traditional yet forward-looking, technical in its choice of natural fibers and designed for winter in all its forms.
Norwegian Heritage, Made for Today
The Telemark Sweater and Cardigan tell a story that began long before this collection.
It is a story of mountain communities, traditional knitting, innovative skiers and a Norwegian approach to winter that balances function with beauty.
Reinterpreted by Tove Grane in soft merino wool and contemporary silhouettes, Telemark becomes something new: a piece of Norwegian heritage designed to be lived in now.
